Before Frank Buchwald designed furniture and lights, he worked as an illustrator and painter, so sketching and drawing are his passion. Frank follows ideas, impressions, and associations and a simple, quick sketch can be the basis for a new project which is then followed by drawing after drawing. For him, this is the only way to find the essence – the character – of a new object. Frank would never work out a concept on the computer. His ideas have to be open, so he can modify every detail one stroke at a time. They are a process in progress. When the concept takes shape, his drawings – the appearance or nature of the object – move more and more in the right direction, as he works out details before the engineering draft. A spontaneous idea can transform the former concept into a modified shape.
As a designer and artist, Frank Buchwald finds his sources of inspiration in various manifestations and forms of expression. He is fascinated by the uncompromising functionality of machines. For Frank, this is most obvious in raw machine artefacts from the industrial age. Art, architecture, and natural forms all influence his work and provide his Machine Lights with their techno-biological character.
The Machine Lights are a new examination of something hidden that interweaves and shapes the sphere of machines. It is associated, for him, with the realization that an independent reality, which withdraws himself from human access, exists behind the manifest appearance of mechanical objects, and secretly determines the world of the machines. Frank likes to convey this secret in such a way that it becomes obvious in his work.
Frank established his company in 1993 and specializes in the design and manufacture of furniture and lights, which are all exclusively hand-made in their own workshop in Berlin. They produce using modern technologies including laser cutting, which are creatively combined with traditional metalwork.
In 2002, Frank changed the emphasis of his work to a more purely artistic focus on his Machine Lights.
